suggest cheap option for hobbyist "vlogger" to store, backup & edit large video files.

I shoot a lot of video, and from time to time edit "vlogs"/ highlight videos that I share with family and friends. I am a total hobbyist, none of my videos are commercial in any way. I'm looking for a cheap (or justifiably priced) and scalable solution to store and backup my raw videos (4K Sony Mirrorless Camera, DJI Mavic Mini, Smartphone Footage etc.). But also would like to make them always accessible for ongoing projects on both my desktop editing rig, and my laptop. (I have syncthing and nextcloud running on a server... but I don't think these are right for this)
I am a huge software nerd.... but I struggle with hardware and storage.... This post is just covering the storage/accessibility/use of my VIDEO files.... But note that I am running several FOSS across 2 NUCs, including a reverse proxy, to many locally hosted, but internet exposed web-apps such as HomeAssistant, Plex/Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Bitwarden, Syncthing, Asterisk (voip) etc.

Currently what I have.

  • 5-6 Western Digital/Seagate 1TB External USB 3.0 Drives, filled up, you know those cheap-o bestbuy special $40 - they are all labelled but scattered around my desk.
  • 1 6tb 3.5 seagate desktop USB 3.0 drive - connected to my desktop
  • 1 8tb 3.5 usb 3.0 drive - connected to my 24/7 media server (also running plex/jellyfin -with sonarradarombi, syncthing, nextcloud)
  • Google Photos (unlimited free/plan which downgrades quality, but hey, its better than nothing - and I actually like to use it as a search function (to find specific places, content, dates etc)
    • Minor annoyance (aside from downgraded quality): googles max file size is 10GB, so some of my large (30 minute plus @ 4k quality) files don't get uploaded automatically - but I have from time to time split them into smaller files using LosslessCut to ensure they upload.
Actually Editing/Project Files:
  • Win10 Desktop equipped with 2TB NVME Drive (Intel 660p), and 500gb SSD for OS/Programs
  • Win10 Laptop equipped with 2TB NVME Drive (Intel 660p), and 250gb SSD for OS/Programs
  • External 1TB Samsung 860 Evo SSD in a fast Sabrent USB 3.1 enclosure.
My Network/Gear:
- Gigabit Internet Fibre-optic service 1000mbps up 1000mbps down, - Gigabit Cat 6 Ethernet to Desktop PC. - WiFi to Laptop ( around 250-350 mbps) on LAN. ( i could also plug via Ethernet, but that's less convenient)
- NUC #1, running MISSION CRITICAL applications ie, HomeAssisant, Asterisk, Bitwarden. - NUC #2, running my media/file server, Jellyfin/Plex +ombi, radarr, sonarr, transmission with VPN, Syncthing, NextCloud
When actually offloading my footage, and working on projects, I prefer to move (copy) all files I'm working on to my 2TB NVME "Active Project" drive. I find working off these high speed drives is much faster and more enjoyable.
My idea when I bought the two 2tb NVME drives, was to sync the one in my laptop, with the one in my desktop so that I could theoretically, work on either device (one at a time obviously) I've also tried taking projects wih me by working directly off the 1TB USB SSD, but its not the best experience.
For archiving structure, if it matters.... When offloading my cameras/devices, I put the files into a YEAR then a subfolder for each DATE to keep track of the date it was shot, then if I used multiple cameras that day, I'll make another folder using the name/model of the camera.
2019 \-- 0120 (MMDD) \------- 2020 -- 0519 (MMDD) --- A6400 \------C0001.mp4 \------C0002.mp4 \-**-- Mavic Mini** \------DJI-0001.mp4
It becomes a bit of a problem though when I'm working on a project, because I generally just copy the file from its archive location (which is either in the 6tb drive attached to my desktop, or on one of the many drvies scattered across my deskop....), to a Project folder on my NVME drive, I'd like to be able to backup the entire project file/folder and retain the links to each archived file, without retaining many copies of the same files... if that makes sense.
I'd also like to be able to securely access all of my files from anywhere in the world (with less speed obv.), on my LAN with local speeds, and ideally being able to transfer copies to my internal NVME drive on my desktop/laptop.
Currently I'm running Syncthing on my Desktop, Laptop and my Media Server, which syncs the NVME drive between my two editing machines (albeit, with large files this takes some time....).
I'm looking for a better solution to be able to access, store and use my footage more efficiently. Right now, I'm spending about $20-30 (CAD) a terabyte for cheap-o USB drives, and using google "free" low quality backups.... this system sucks in terms connectivity/scalability... but it's pretty cheap. If there is a software/server config or even a low cost hardware solution anyone can think of I'm all ears. .... and I'd like to avoid piling up USB drives.
BTW, I use a "trial/evaluation version" of Adobe Premiere Pro, and sometimes After Effects for video-editing. Again, I'll mention this is all for personal-use only, totally non-commercial.
